mahabharata in the front yard

Once upon a time, there was a poor little girl, with no money, no prospects. Then came along a rich suitor, promising to make her rich and famous. Then the rest of the village, who had never helped her when she was in dire straits, started calling it a rape of the innocent and wanted everyone from the government to the most ardent protectors of democratic rights, who else but the left parties to intervene. However, none of them, as on date, has offered to put a penny where their mouth is.

Yes, I am talking about a certain news agency which had fallen on bad days, with subscribers, who also sit on her board of directors, ditching her in favour of a rival agency. The agency, formed under a trust act, forbid the board of directors from taking any money away. Any profits were to be ploughed back into the running of the company.

Now Mr Moneybags says upfront he wants to maintain the character of the agency, has no plans to close it down or go in for massive retrenchment. The employees, journalists included, however, decided to write their own script as soon as the move for Mr M's interest became known. A Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed, note the word JAC, it is to be read as jack ass. Otherwise, how do you explain the lunacy of these idiots to write the script for M's takeover and subsequent closing down of the agency just to grab a piece of real estate. They also held the general manager guilty of not disclosing the facts to the employees union, of all things. Where in the world are corporate dealings announced beforehand.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, lunch hour meetings were held, politicos of every colour was called in and it all culminated in a sort of picketing of Mr Moneybags when he came and subsequent manhandling. The management then decided enough was enough and issued memos for indiscipline. So now we have the spectacle of abject surrender. One of them, who publically announced that it was a Mahabharat and colleagues in the management could get eliminated, ironically was the first to go.

The union, on their part, ensured that any management would seek to crush them at the first opportunity. It is time that all these hotheads realised that for launching any moment, it has to have a just and truthful cause. You cannot run a movement to get rid of a few whom you do not like.
